Protecting Critical Infrastructure: The New National Cybersecurity Strategy

On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, INSA hosted a two-part online panel discussion focused on the new National Cybersecurity Strategy's impact on critical infrastructure services providers.

Part I: Highlights of National Cybersecurity Strategy’s

The first panel, moderated by INSA Vice President for Policy, Bishop Garrison, featured Brian Scott, Deputy Assistant National Cyber Director, ONCD; and Lauren Zabierek, Senior Policy Advisor, CISA.

The program kicked off with a discussion of the new national strategy in light of growing ransomware and other cyber and physical threats. Mr. Scott and Ms. Zabierek explained how the new strategy shifts the federal approach towards the security of critical infrastructure, as well as investments in the future. They covered the ‘how and why’ of the new strategy’s approach to shift the burden from the end-user to the service providers. In closing, Mr. Scott and Ms. Zabierek discuss the use of incentives to encourage best security practice, including Zero Trust, and the importance of continuing public-private collaboration to make implementation a success.

Part II: Industry Perspectives on National Cybersecurity Strategy

The second panel, moderated by INSA’s Executive Vice President, John Doyon, included, Chris Boyer, Vice President, AT&T; Amanda Craig, Senior Director, Microsoft; and Matthew Eggers, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Speakers expanded on the earlier discussion with an incorporation of industry perspectives. Panelists spoke about the the importance of strengthening operational cooperation and public-private collaboration throughout the implementation of strategy standards and requirements. In addition, they reiterated how important it is for regulations to balance industry interests and to  complement existing partnerships.
