AI-Driven Clarity at the Edge
June 8, 2026 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
On Monday, June 8, the INSA Foundation hosted the second installment of the 2026 Future of the IC Workforce: Enhancing Intelligence Operations webinar series, AI-Driven Clarity at the Edge, featuring Katherine Bukolt, Chief of the MARS Program, DIA; Justin Karneeb, CTO, Knexus Research; and moderator Lindy Kyzer, VP of Content, ClearanceJobs.
Underwritten by Booz Allen, the discussion focused on how government and industry are modernizing data processing at the edge. Ms. Bukolt explained that DIA's MARS team supports operators by rapidly collecting and analyzing all-source intelligence, providing timely information on adversaries, infrastructure, military equipment, and operational environments. From the industry perspective, Mr. Karneeb described Knexus Research's mission of taking "all of the great AI research and technologies...out of the research world and into solving the real problems" facing users at the edge. He emphasized that AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a tool that can be applied creatively to address specific challenges.
Both speakers stressed the importance of responsible AI adoption. Mr. Karneeb compared AI to the calculator, noting that while it "fundamentally changed the way people did certain kinds of work," it did not replace the need for people to understand the underlying concepts.
Ms. Bukolt highlighted the need to maintain tradecraft, governance, and analyst oversight when incorporating AI into intelligence workflows. Particularly at the edge, where commanders rely on time-sensitive information, preserving confidence in the accuracy and authority of intelligence remains essential. She noted that the IC must "maintain oversight of how our analysts are using [AI]" to ensure information remains authoritative and actionable.
The panel concluded with advice for students interested in national security careers. Both speakers encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to challenge assumptions rather than relying solely on AI. Ms. Bukolt emphasized that a "spirit of innovation" and a refusal to simply accept what technology provides will remain critical qualities for future IC professionals.
