INSA Releases Intelligence Insights on the Use of AI in Insider Risk Management
Arlington, VA (August 6, 2025)—The Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) today released a new Intelligence Insights paper, Recommendations When Using AI in Insider Risk Management (PDF), developed by INSA's Insider Threat Subcommittee. As insider threats grow more complex, the paper offers practical guidance for organizations considering how artificial intelligence can help identify risky behaviors, improve response times, and support investigations.
Insider threats, whether caused by negligence, malicious intent, or compromised credentials, remain a top concern for government, academia, and industry. With traditional tools struggling to keep pace, many organizations are turning to AI to strengthen detection and decision-making within their insider risk programs.
The paper outlines how AI can bolster insider risk management (IRM) by analyzing behavioral patterns, detecting early signs of disengagement, and enabling more timely, informed responses. It highlights key factors for successful implementation, including cross-functional collaboration, strong human oversight, continuous model validation, and clear policies that respect both security and privacy.
By thoughtfully integrating AI into IRM programs, the paper concludes, organizations can improve their ability to detect and mitigate threats while maintaining trust and accountability.
INSA extends its sincere thanks to the members of the Insider Threat Subcommittee for their time, expertise, and contributions to this paper.
