Lt. Gen. Michael Groen, USMC (Ret.)

Former Director, Joint Artificial Intelligence Center

Lt. Gen. Michael S. Groen, USMC (Ret.) had a thirty-six-year military career, culminating in his service as the Director of the Pentagon’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center. As the senior executive for artificial intelligence in the Department of Defense, he led the transformation of US Joint warfighting and departmental processes through the integration of artificial intelligence. Previously, Gen. Groen served in the National Security Agency, overseeing Computer Network Operations, and as the Director of Joint Staff Intelligence (JSJ2), working closely with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Secretary of Defense and Senior Leaders across the Department.  He has served in and with a wide range of U.S. intelligence organizations.  During his Marine Corps career, he served as the Director of Marine Corps Intelligence, and was a principal in the redesign of a modernized Marine Corps ISR Enterprise.  He is an experienced Marine commander and multi-tour combat veteran. Gen. Groen has earned Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School.  He is an experienced change-agent, with a penchant for modernizing capabilities, organizations, and cultures. Today, Gen. Groen seeks to inform transformational change in military and intelligence capabilities against the backdrop of an accelerating pace of tech integration, rapidly modernizing opponents, and challenges to American competitiveness.
