Mr. Michael A. Usowski was appointed as the Defense Intelligence Officer for Space and Counterspace in October 2024. In this role, he advises DIA senior leadership and other Department of Defense and Intelligence Community officials on the full spectrum of intelligence matters related to space and counterspace, including analysis, collection, counterintelligence, international engagement, intelligence policy, and outreach. He is responsible for integrating these disciplines and activities across DIA and the military service intelligence centers and for posturing the defense intelligence enterprise to meet the future demands of space intelligence customers.

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Usowski was the Senior Defense Intelligence Analyst for Space and Counterspace, where he led the planning, directing, and management of space and counterspace intelligence analysis and production across the Defense Intelligence All-Source Analysis Enterprise. He developed and implemented strategies and analytic capabilities to support combatant command, policymaker, and defense acquisition community intelligence requirements.

Mr. Usowski has held numerous assignments across the agency, to include the following: Senior Intelligence Officer, Analytic Enterprise Management, Directorate for Analysis (DI); Chief, DI Force Management Division; Chief, Current Analysis Division, Joint Staff J2; Senior Intelligence Officer, DI Executive Support Office; and Executive Officer to the DIA Deputy Director.

He completed a joint duty rotation as a senior strategy management officer at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). During his ODNI tenure, he was the chief architect and lead author of the 2014 National Intelligence Strategy.

Before joining DIA as a civilian in 2007, Mr. Usowski worked as an associate with Booz Allen Hamilton and a business process analyst with Northrop Grumman Information Technology, providing support to the Joint Staff J2, J7, and J8. Prior to that, Mr. Usowski served 5 years as an Air Force intelligence officer, supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation DESERT FOX, and Joint Task Force –Southwest Asia.

Mr. Usowski holds a B.S. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Usowski was born and raised in Auburn, NY. He resides in Alexandria, VA with his wife, Kathryn (KC) Tydgat, and sons, Michael David and Thomas.
