Common Threads Huntsville-Cyber Threats to Space

May 12 to 13, 2026

2026 Common Threads Huntsville

Nearly 100 professionals from the Huntsville region attended the May 12-13, Common Threads Huntsville, Cyber Threats to Space Operations: Securing the Ultimate High Ground

The May 12 unclassified program kicked off with Career Conversations, a jampacked job fair held in partnership with ClearanceJobs, followed by a welcome reception, allowing ample time for networking, catching up with colleagues, and relationship building. The formal program opened with welcome remarks from Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, who underscored Huntsville’s emergence as a leading hub for national security innovation at the intersection of space, cyber, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.

Keynote remarks were delivered by Steven Rush, Chief of DIA's Missile and Space Intelligence Center, who described today’s environment as the most rapid transition of the space and counterspace domain in history. Mr. Rush stressed that maintaining strategic advantage will require unprecedented coordination across the Intelligence Community, industry, academia, and allied partners.

Framing space resilience as a mission imperative, Mr. Rush outlined three major areas shaping the future fight: significant investments in infrastructure modernization, the application of artificial intelligence and large language models to accelerate decision advantage, and material exploitation efforts that strengthen cyber defense and operational awareness. He also highlighted MSIC’s close collaboration with the Missile Defense Agency, United States Space Command, and Golden Dome for America.

Throughout the discussion, Mr. Rush reinforced that U.S. national power, economic strength, and military superiority are deeply dependent not only on space assets, but also on the ground systems and digital infrastructure that enable them. He emphasized that “space superiority does not begin in orbit,” but instead starts with resilient infrastructure and strong partnerships across government, industry, allies, and the academic sector.

In discussing the future workforce, Mr. Rush highlighted growing demand for expertise in model-based systems engineering, AI integration, and advanced data capabilities, underscoring the importance of developing talent able to operate effectively across increasingly data-driven and AI-enabled missions. He stressed the need for more talent in STEM-based research to meet the technological demands of the future.

He closed with a clear message for attendees: the future of strategic advantage will belong to those who can successfully integrate resilience, partnerships, and emerging technologies into mission operations. As Mr. Rush noted, decision advantage will belong to those who can leverage AI in contested environments.

During the classified program, Sean Redman, Director of Intelligence and Security for Golden Dome for America, joined MG Barbara Fast, USA (Ret.), President/CEO, BGF Enterprises, for a fireside chat. Following the fireside chat, Steve Rush, COL Timothy Measner, USA Commander, Joint Intelligence Operations Center, US Space Command, and COL Derek Bothern, USA, Deputy Director, Space and Missile Center of Excellence, US Army Space and Missile Defense Command, joined Mr. Redman and Ms. Fast on stage for a classified panel discussion.
