U.S. Army LTG Robert P. Ashley, Jr., Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), was INSA’s honored guest and keynote speaker at its Leadership Dinner on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel.
In prepared remarks, LTG Ashley expressed his amazement at the breadth and depth of expertise that DIA possesses and how that expertise has enabled the agency to provide leaders with decision advantage. He said in a world where the speed of communication and human interaction continues to accelerate, intelligence agencies must learn to adapt and harness emerging capabilities, such as big data. He emphasized the importance of history and the context it provides to understanding the operational environment.
In a wide-ranging after-dinner conversation with moderator David Shedd, General Ashley discussed the challenges of operationalizing new technologies to support intelligence efforts, as well as open-source intelligence (OSINT) and efforts to integrate OSINT across DIA and the broader Community. Additional topics included how the DIA workforce will evolve over the next decade, artificial intelligence, and the evolution of the Intelligence Community Information Technology Enterprise (IC ITE), among others.
