Doing Business with the Government

INSA and The Intelligence and Security Academy are pleased to offer Doing Business with the Government, a full day in-person training class focused on the relationship between the government and its vendors.
Taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm ET in Arlington, VA, the course provides government contractors with an insider’s understanding of how the government works to align its requirements for personnel, equipment, facilities, resources, and services with the financial resources needed to fund these requirements. Class size is limited to 30 registrants.
Although this class in not intended to teach students how to be government contractors or how to win contracts, it provides useful information to help contractors understand the government processes that can lead to contracting opportunities.
Through this course, students will be able to identify how best to engage in the contracting and acquisition processes and to apply that knowledge to increase opportunities to provide services to the government. Each student will be provided with a printed booklet of course materials. A laptop or tablet is not required. The course is unclassified.

The target audience for this course are people who are new to supporting and/or working with government contracts in the intelligence community and other agencies, as well as those individuals with experience but seeking a comprehensive overview of government contracting.

Richard P. McFarland is an independent consultant in the national security and infrastructure communities. His experience includes positions in both the public and private sectors. Before retiring from industry in the spring of 2022, he served as a career Air Force officer working on both Service and national space and intelligence programs, which was followed by positions at Raytheon as Director of Congressional Relations, and at Parsons where he led their Washington Operations group. on both Service and national space and intelligence programs which was followed by positions at Raytheon as Director of Congressional Relations, and at Parsons where he led Washington Operations group.
Johnny Sawyer is founder of The Sawyer Group, a consulting firm focused on partnering with organizations to deliver tailor-made practical defense, intelligence and strategic management solutions. Following a distinguished 22-year military career as a U.S. Army officer, he joined the DIA in 2001 and served in multiple positions of increased responsibility during his 20-year tenure. His senior executive assignments included principal deputy director for analysis; first director, Middle East/Africa Regional Center; chief, Middle East North Africa Office; chief, Defense Resources and Infrastructure Office; and senior expert for enterprise management. Mr. Sawyer’s last assignment at DIA was chief of staff. As the third ranking officer at DIA, he was the Agency’s chief operating officer—overseeing 16,000 officers and a multi-billion-dollar budget.
