On Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the Key Bridge Marriott, INSA hosted its first event of the year, “Focus Forward… Expanding Intelligence Community Networks.” This was the first event of its kind for INSA and was met with great success! The event concentrated on mentoring and creating contacts across the Intelligence Community (IC). Participants had the opportunity to select a career track and meet with five established members of the IC for 15 minutes each, providing the participants the opportunity to speak with several people from different areas of the IC, both public and private.
The Co-Chair of INSA’s Intelligence Champions Council (ICC) and a member of INSA’s Board of Advisors, Mike Thomas delivered the opening remarks and thanked INSA staff and Council members for their work putting together the event. Mike then thanked and described the achievements of the keynote speaker, Robert Cardillo, Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Intelligence Integration.
Robert’s passion for the Community, his desire to share his experiences and his enthusiasm for the opportunity to speak at this event were evident in his remarks. Robert stressed the importance of mentors and described how they often helped him in simple ways by recognizing his work and dedication. Robert’s speech had the audience laughing, but it also had valuable lessons. In his own career, Robert stated, he had several mentors that inspired and encouraged him, sometimes by simply recognizing his hard work and dedication. While stressing the importance of mentors, Robert also stressed the importance of proactively taking control and owning your career.
Following the speech, participants moved to their tables and the mentoring sessions began. The enthusiastic conversations created a dull roar with only a slight pause every fifteen minutes as participants moved to a different mentor. At the end of all the sessions, Chuck Alsup, INSA’s Acting President, gave the closing remarks where he thanked Robert and all of the mentors, but stressed that the evening’s focus was on the next generation of leaders in the IC.
The tremendous enthusiasm leading up to this event carried through the evening. Participants responded with high praise and as one exclaimed, “The caliber of mentors was superb! They all projected a passion for their work, while representing a diversity of IC agencies and disciplines.” Others asked for more events such as this and one stated, “Incredible event that I have told friends about already.” The post-event enthusiasm is sure to create a buzz for the next ICC event!
